60s Mini Dresses
Contemporary 1960s style is a special interest of mine. It was the dawn of modern fashion and a new era of self-expression. Before this, teenagers typically wore their mothers’ clothing, conforming to established norms of style. In the post-war hippie revolution, youths were empowered to express themselves through fashion, and ignited the iconic mini skirt revolution. Particular inspiration comes from labels Barbara Hulanicki, Mary Quant, and Lady Jane.
Designers such as Emanuel Ungaro and Yves Saint Laurent pushed couture tailoring into bold, futuristic designs for young people who wanted everyday wear. And of course Pucci's influence of the psychedelic patterns flowing into the next decade.
These inspirations led to my creation of these bold shift dresses. The silhouette is simple, and is carried by the daringly short hemlines and bold patterns. Here I showcase a single bust dart through pattern manipulation, French seams for a clean inside finish, lapped zip, and bias binding on the arm and neck holes.
