1880s Corset
I found a copy of an original corset pattern from c.1880 in Norah Waugh’s 'Corsets and Crinolines'.
This sent me down a rabbit-hole, learning of stays, corsets, and underwear throughout history, their societal connotations, and their controversies.
To recreate this corset, I used mostly secondhand materials. Acknowledging that I could not achieve historical accuracy with my resource limitations, this isn't always necessary for the design outcome
I used a polyester two-toned fabric and brought the red and blue colours together with vintage Sylko thread and red velvet ribbon. To utilise materials I already had, I sacrificed the traditional coutile lining and used cotton canvas. I opted for hand-sewn lacing grommets, a straight busk, and artificial whale boning, incorporating red bone flossing influenced by the original design.
Inspired by the garment in the book as well as a c. 1890 corset on display at the V&A. The dramatic silhouette is integral to high fashion of the period.
To ensure accurate fit, I made mock up's, and amended the pattern pieces. In hindsight, for historical accuracy, I would have added a bust gusset between the cording, rather than curving the original piece.
This project has been deeply influential on my sewing skills and my approach to projects. It has taught me about the intention behind creation, and tested my proficiency in drafting, cutting and stitching with extreme accuracy and attention to detail.
